First lady Jill Biden was praised by many in the media for the way she wore her hair this week following four years of hostile treatment from news outlets directed at former first lady Melania Trump.
“First Lady Jill Biden Wore a Scrunchie While Shopping and People Felt So Seen,” a Glamour magazine headline read on Feb. 13 describing Biden’s appearance at a bakery.

The Washington Post reacted to Biden’s outing with a headline reading, “Scrunchies and dog walking: the country gets a taste of Jill Biden’s radical normalcy.”
The article praised Biden’s decision to wear a scrunchie while taking a shot at Trump, a former supermodel, for wearing an expensive designer jacket years ago.
“Leave it to a scrunchie to capture the zeitgeist of President Biden’s promise to ‘return to normalcy,’ a stark departure from the ‘I don’t really care’ message sent by Trump,” Jacqueline Alemany wrote in the article. “After four highly choreographed and manicured years, Jill Biden’s laissez-faire approach to her public image and affectionate relationship with her husband may foreshadow a different approach to the traditionally staid and formal office of the first lady.”

Biden’s coverage stands in stark contrast to that of Trump, who was often mocked by media outlets during her time in the White House for a variety of alleged infractions, including her Christmas decorations, her approval rating, her push to combat childhood bullying, and her fashion choices.
Media reporter Joe Concha claimed she was the most poorly treated first lady in “the modern era,” pointing to a Washington Post headline that said, “People are making bets on whether Melania Trump will divorce Donald Trump.”
“That’s all you have to know about the treatment of Melania Trump,” Concha said.
Former President Donald Trump took notice of the negative coverage directed at his wife, retweeting a post in December that said, “The elitist snobs in the fashion press have kept the most elegant First Lady in American history off the covers of their magazines for 4 consecutive years.”
