HHS inspector general to review Trump administration decision to pull Obamacare ads

The independent watchdog at the Health and Human Services Department says it will investigate the Trump administration’s decision to pull paid advertisements and temporarily suspend other outreach efforts for Healthcare.gov.

HHS Inspector General Daniel Levinson wrote a letter, dated Thursday but made public Friday, to Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Patty Murray after they reached out to ask for a review of the move as the 2016-2017 enrollment season came to a close.

“Our inquiry will include the timeline, decision-making process, and factors considered by HHS, including any HHS analyses of implications for enrollment and/or expected costs or savings,” Levinson wrote.

More than 12.2 million people have signed up for Obamacare this year so far.

Republicans in the House failed to initiate a vote on a bill that was intended to repeal and replace Obamacare when it became all but certain it didn’t have the votes to pass.
