Texas mother throws COVID-positive son in car trunk on way to test site

A Texas mother locked up her son, who was positive for COVID-19, in the trunk of her car on the way to a testing site, reports say.

Sarah Beam, 41, put her 13-year-old son in her trunk to avoid getting exposed to COVID-19 while driving to a testing site near Pridgeon Stadium, which is in Harris County, on Monday, KPRC reported. Beam, who was most recently employed as a teacher in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, has been charged with endangering a child, and the Cypress Fairbanks ISD Police Department has issued a warrant for her arrest, the report said.

“CFPD was alerted that a child was in the trunk of a car at a drive-thru COVID-19 testing site earlier this week,” police told the outlet. “Law enforcement conducted a full investigation, resulting in a warrant for arrest. Thankfully, the child was not harmed.”

Officials told Beam that they would not test her unless the child was moved to the back seat, which eventually happened. They then called the police.

Beam told Bevin Gordon, the director of health services, that the child was in the trunk because of a previous positive COVID-19 test result, Fox News reported.

Beam has been placed on administrative leave, according to the outlet. She has worked in the district since 2011 and was most recently working at Cypress Falls High School as a teacher.

Representatives for the CFPD did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
