PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — American Civil Liberties Union affiliates in about two dozen states, including Rhode Island, are asking police and state agencies to better explain how they use automatic license plate readers.
The ACLU of Rhode Island says on Monday that at least one police department, Providence, uses the technology. It has filed public records requests to find out whether any other city police departments or the state police have the technology or plan to get it.
The ACLU say there is growing use of the technology around the nation. It says the data is potentially stored indefinitely after it is gathered from cameras mounted on patrol cars or along roads.
Maine and New Hampshire have limited the use of such technology and the Rhode Island ACLU says it may push for similar legislation.
