Reports: Leading U.S. commander secretly visits Syria

General Joseph Votel, head of U.S. Central Command, made a day-long secret visit to Syria, according to the Associated Press.

Votel visited with Syrian fighters and U.S. military advisers in northern Syria and is now in Jordan, CNN reported.

President Obama, who is traveling to Vietnam and Japan, recently deployed 250 Americans troops to Syria to help in the fight against the Islamic State. Votel’s visit comes as the U.S. is stepping up its military involvement in the region.
