Tom Steyer to make announcement on his 'political plans' in Iowa

Tom Steyer, the billionaire California hedge fund manager backing a campaign to impeach President Trump, is set to make an announcement in Iowa about his political future.

“On Wednesday, January 9th, Tom Steyer will make an announcement concerning his political plans in 2019 and beyond,” his NextGen organization, a liberal advocacy group, wrote in a statement to reporters. “Steyer will also answer questions regarding his plans for the future and his vision for the country.”

Steyer, 61, made public his intention to travel to the first-in-the-nation caucus state last week, so he could talk to political leaders, teachers, and students about “the right to learn.” His “Five Rights” platform, which he started promoting last November, also includes the right to an equal vote, clean air and clean water, living wage, and health.

Steyer will also speak with Iowa Latino and Asia Coalition representatives and host a town hall during the trip.

The vocal Trump critic has been openly considering a bid for the White House, investing $120 million ahead of the 2018 midterm elections to boost Democratic candidates.

Two contenders, Maryland congressman Tom Delaney and West Virginia state senator Richard Ojeda, have already declared their intention to run for the presidency. Former Obama administration Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro is anticipated to launch his campaign on Saturday.

Meanwhile Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., announced on Dec. 31 that she had launched an exploratory committee for a White House bid.
