2020 presidential candidate John Delaney accused his fellow presidential candidates of “cheering on a recession” to hurt President Trump’s chances of reelection.
“I hope it’s not, you know, it feels like some Democrats are cheering on a recession because they want to stick it to Trump,” Delaney said in response to a question from Associated Press reporter Alexandra Jaffe if he thought a recession was likely.
“I don’t want a recession, because I don’t want these workers in here to face a recession, but I worry that Trump’s polices are bringing one on,” he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, President Trump made the same accusation but directed it at the “LameStream media.”
“The Fake News LameStream Media is doing everything possible the ‘create’ a U.S. recession, even though the numbers & facts are working totally in the opposite direction,” the president tweeted. “They would be willing to hurt many people, but that doesn’t matter to them. Our Economy is sooo strong, sorry!”

Trump’s pointed remarks echo those of multiple Fox News personalities, including Martha MacCallum and Charles Payne, who argued that members of the media were hoping for an economic downturn in a way that would harm Trump’s reelection campaign. Comedian Bill Maher likewise recently said a recession would be “worth it,” if it meant ousting Trump.
