A 29-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison for an armed carjacking.
Jose Mejia, also known as Efren Omar Lopez-Corrales, was sentenced in federal court in Greenbelt. He pleaded guilty in August to approaching a vehicle on the 3800 block of Hamilton Street in Hyattsville in 2008 as its driver was entering.
Mejia pointed a gun at a passenger and ordered to be driven to Baltimore in the 2003 Toyota Highlander. The driver said Baltimore was too far, and Mejia demanded that they drive to a residential neighborhood and stop the car. Mejia ordered that the driver and passengers leave the vehicle, and he took a jacket and purses before driving away.
He was caught when a D.C. police officer saw him changing the tire of the vehicle on the 300 block of 14th Street SW.
