AAA forecast: Washington taking off for July 4th

Washingtonians will be on the move for the holiday weekend, according AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The drivers’ club estimates that nearly 750,000 locals will be driving somewhere for the Fourth of July holiday, a 19 percent increase over last year. More will also be taking flight, with an estimated 33,000 booked on plane tickets, a 9.1 percent increase.

Even other modes such as trains, motorcycle and buses are forecasted to see increases of 15.6 percent, with 35,000 estimated to traveling.

“Washingtonians are traveling more this summer and it is a trend we began seeing at Memorial Day and now it’s continuing over the Fourth and it’s likely to continue though Labor Day,” said spokesman John Townsend.

The group credits a 10-cent drop in average gas prices since Memorial Day weekend as spurring some of the additional road traffic.
