Not living in the District could soon cost its city workers

At-large Councilman Sekou Biddle has introduced a bill that would require new D.C. city government employees who choose not to live in the District to pay 4 percent of their paycheck back to the city.

Because of its status as a federal agency, the District is the only city in the country that can’t tax commuters who work in the city and live outside its borders. Biddle’s bill is designed to help address the dollars that are lost when city workers pick up their paychecks and then pay their taxes outside of D.C.

About 60 percent of the D.C. government’s workforce lives outside othe District.
