Meghan McCain criticized first daughter and White House adviser Ivanka Trump for insisting she’s not a “political person.”
“The part that I find confusing about [Ivanka] is that she works in the administration; she has an office in the White House, and she has claimed not to be a political person. I don’t know how to reconcile that,” McCain told Politico’s “Women Rule” podcast. “You’re working in the White House. The White House is a political job. It’s the most powerful political job in the world.”
Trump said last summer she “tries to stay out of politics,” despite being a frequent presence on the campaign trail and a top adviser to her father, President Trump.
“You’re an adviser to your father, who also happens to be the president, and you’re not a political person? I don’t like things like that,” McCain said.
McCain pointed to Ivanka Trump’s praise of Oprah Winfrey’s Golden Globes speech, which many interpreted as Winfrey planting the seeds for a potential presidential run in 2020.
“When she said Oprah’s speech was amazing, Oprah’s speech was so politically loaded, and if anyone had gone on a platform like the Golden Globes and made a speech that was even in a tiny way, or a small veiled way, a criticism of my father, I’m totally like mafia-style. I would have nothing nice to say about it,” McCain said. “So, it just confuses me.”
McCain said she would like Trump to speak more about politics, not just paid family leave.
“I just kinda wish I would hear more from her on all politics,” she said.
