Arlington County board member Barbara Favola will run for the Virginia state Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple.
Favola said she’ll make a formal announcement in April, but did confirm Thursday morning that she intends to run.
“That’s absolutely what I expect to do,” she said.
Favola said she spent the past several days making calls and mulling over the decision, and concluded that there was enough support behind her to make a run.
Whipple and fellow Northern Virginia Sen. Patsy Ticer each announced they will not seek re-election this fall, leaving two open senate races for the region.
UPDATE: Another Arlington County board member, Jay Fisette, said he will not run for the Virginia Senate. In an email, Fisette said that he gave serious thought to a campaign after Whipple’s surprising retirement, but ultimately chose not to run.
