A federal court ruled Monday the new districts drawn by Wisconsin’s Republican-led Assembly are unconstitutional, according to the Associated Press.
Almost two weeks after the November election, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the new districts were unconstitutionally gerrymandered. The three-judge panel ruled the new districts violate the voting rights of the Democratic plaintiffs who brought the suit.
The maps divide the state up into 99 Assembly and 32 Senate districts, according to the AP.
The lawsuit was brought on behalf of 12 Democrats who argued the new districts diluted their voting power, while the state argued the districts reflected the fact Wisconsin has been trending in a Republican direction as of late.
Democrats have been in the minority in Wisconsin since 2010 and lost more ground in this year’s election, the AP reported.
The ruling can be appealed to the Supreme Court.
