GOP won’t vote on healthcare this week

The House will not vote on healthcare this week, denying President Trump a signature legislative win in his first 100 days.

House GOP leadership announced on Thursday that they won’t vote on the American Health Care Act as they still search for votes, according to published reports.

It was widely expected among members that a vote this week on healthcare was doubtful, but leadership was encouraged by bringing the House Freedom Caucus on board with a new deal that lets states opt out of certain Obamacare regulations.

However, concerns among centrists about the protections for people with pre-existing conditions created a new hurdle for leadership.

The delay until next week at the earliest means that President Trump will celebrate his 100-day anniversary on Saturday without a vote on healthcare.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy confirmed there wouldn’t be a vote this week after leaving a late-night meeting with leadership, according to The Hill.

The move comes as Republicans continue to try to persuade enough wary centrists. Republicans need to get to 217 votes to pass the legislation.
