Virginia races are usually not called as early as this one, and could be a good sign for the House races in the state.

Stewart did not receive an endorsement from the National Republican Senatorial Committee in his race against the Democratic incumbent.

Hillary Clinton won Virginia in the 2016 presidential election with Kaine on the ticket as her vice president candidate. Democrats have won every statewide election in Virginia since 2009, WJLA notes.

One of the other first projected victors Tuesday night is Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who will likely hold on to his Senate seat as well.

Sanders, a Democratic Socialist, lost the Democratic primary for president against Clinton in the 2016 elections, but has been serving Vermont in the Senate since 2007.
