Arresting developments for the Lions

NFL training camps can’t start soon enough, especially in Detroit. Then again, after cornerback Aaron Berry’s latest run-in with the law, his offseason just got extended.

Following his arrest last weekend in Harrisburg, Pa., for allegedly pointing a handgun at three people, Berry was released by the Lions on Monday.

“We have repeatedly stressed to everyone in our organization that there will be appropriate consequences when an expected standard of behavior is not upheld,” Lions president Tom Lewand said.

Except that not only was it Berry’s second arrest in a month — the previous one was for driving under the influence — it was also the seventh this offseason by a member of the Lions. Defensive tackle Nick Fairley (separate charges of DUI and possession of marijuana), running back Mikel Leshoure (cited twice for marijuana possession) and offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath (marijuana) are all still with team.

Instead of building on a 10-6 record and the franchise’s first playoff appearance since 1999, the Lions have only just figured out that appropriate steps are required to establish a standard before it can be upheld.
