LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman who plotted with her then-boyfriend to steal more than a half-million dollars from a bank in East Los Angeles by pretending she had a bomb taped to her body is charged with filing a fraudulent workers’ compensation claim following the heist.
The LA County District Attorney’s Office said 33-year-old Aurora Barrera was charged Monday with fraud after she claimed she had post-traumatic stress disorder following the robbery.
Prosecutors say she collected $35,000 in disability benefits and faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
The former Bank of America branch manager persuaded a co-worker to help her empty a vault by saying she had a bomb taped to her body. It turned out to be fake.
She was sentenced to nine years in prison for the robbery.
