The Trumps receive royal gifts during UK visit

Queen Elizabeth II gifted President Trump with a first-edition copy of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s memoirs about World War II, during his visit to the United Kingdom.

The edition of The Second World War is adorned with a crimson and gold-tooled cover, and was published in 1959. The queen also gave Trump a three-piece pen set.

It is customary for the queen to present gifts to visiting heads of state and dignitaries, although this gift could be tailored to Trump, as Churchill is reportedly an inspiration for him.

Churchill famously led England through World War II, serving as prime minister from 1940 to 1945. He served again in the role from 1951 to 1955.

The 93-year-old queen also gifted first lady Melania Trump a “specially commissioned silver box” with a “handcrafted enamel lid” during their Monday meeting.

Gift exchanges between the U.S. and the royal family have made headlines in the past. In 2009, President Barack Obama gave the queen an iPod filled with photos from his inauguration and clips of his speeches. The gift was criticized as being gauche and the queen reportedly already owned an iPod. In 2011, the queen gifted Obama a leather-bound volume entitled A Selection of Papers From the Royal Archives 1834-1897 and gave first lady Michelle Obama a broach with gold leaves and coral flowers.

Trump will be in the U.K. for three days. Prior to meeting with the queen, the Trumps were greeted by Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla. Trump will attend a royal banquet at Buckingham Palace on Monday evening.
