A Potomac woman was the first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant Sunday night.
Miss Maryland USA 2012 Nana Meriwether lost the title to 20-year-old Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island.
Meriwether, 27, has both beauty and brains. According to her bio on the pageant’s website, she received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California – Los Angeles and studied as a post-baccalaurate pre-medical student at the University of Southern California. She’s now applying to medical schools.
The first runner-up also has athletic skill. She played volleyball while at UCLA, becoming a two-time NCAA All-American, and played the sport professionally in Puerto Rico, according to her bio.
Meriwether attended Sidwell Friends School, the same school President Obama’s daughters attend. She cofounded a nonprofit, The Meriwether Foundation, that operates in five countries in southern Africa.
