The Susquehanna River corridor, known for its scenic views and recreational opportunities, is a gathering place for many in the Harford area. It is also a gathering place for trash.
“Every year, our volunteers remove about 10,000 pounds of litter,” said Mary Ann Lisanti, executive director of the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway.
Plastic bottles, tires, shopping bags, junk food wrappers, barrels and even mattresses clutter the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay shoreline, Lisanti said.
That problem inspired the annual Riversweep event, where volunteers meet at one of three locations and spend three hours during low tide walking the waterways, picking up debris.
The seventh annual event ? from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 22, rain or shine ? draws individuals, families and youth groups together for a day of hard work and fun.
Free lunch and T-shirts are provided to participants who register in advance.
