All the big hits and fast-paced action return as EA Sports churns out another installment of its ice hockey sim.
“NHL 11” is a true hockey fan’s dream, with tons of game modes such as Be the GM, Be a Pro and the new Hockey Ultimate Team. Along with all the regular gameplay options, you can take your Ultimate Team online to compete in monthly leagues on Xbox Live.
The game has added a plethora of new content including an updated faceoff mode, broken sticks and lifelike reactions from the computer-controlled players. Also, players trying to deflect shots near the goal, the ability to make quick dekes and seeing the referees hop up on the boards when a player or the puck gets too close are a few more of the nice touches that immerse you in the game.
Aside from the standard selectable NHL teams, there are all 60 Canadian Hockey League teams.
From the beginning, there are short training modes that attempt to get you up to speed on how to play the game that offer a tiny bit of help. Movement controls are top notch, while passing and shooting can be a bit cumbersome — though once mastered you can pull off some amazing feats.
On top of all the in-game content, the game looks spectacular. The upgraded graphics will make you want a huge HDTV to play on, while the soundtrack and sounds effects make you feel like you are in the arena. All that’s missing is the smell of the ice.
The only drawback is that many of the game modes could be considered too complicated for the casual gamer or non-hockey enthusiast.
But for the hardcore hockey fan, there isn’t anything better.
