The Los Angeles Police Department issued a “citywide tactical alert” on Tuesday evening ahead of what are expected to be large demonstrations on the streets of the Southern California city in response to the election.
The alert was issued to “address any incidents that may arise as a result of election day activities,” police said, although the announcement noted that the decision was “not the result of any specific incident.”

Police throughout the United States have prepared a number of procedures to address what is likely to be contentious aftermath no matter who wins the election.
Law enforcement in Los Angeles also announced that laser pointers or laser-style devices have been banned while attending public demonstrations. Violations will be considered misdemeanors, according to CBSLA.
