Sony acquiring video game developer Bungie in 3.6 billion-dollar deal

Sony is buying the video game developer Bungie in a deal valued at $3.6 billion.

Bungie, best known for producing the multiplayer first-person shooter Destiny 2, will become an “independent subsidiary” of Sony Interactive Entertainment, which handles software and hardware for the PlayStation console.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome Bungie to the PlayStation family!” tweeted Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios. “Bungie creates community-driven games with outstanding technology that are enormous fun to play, and I know that everyone at PlayStation Studios will be excited about what we can share and learn together.”

“We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family,” Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan said in a press statement.

Sony’s acquisition of Destiny will not affect whether other console systems will have access to the game in the future. Bungie will “continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games,” said Bungie CEO Pete Parsons in a blog post.

Bungie noted in an FAQ that the company being acquired by Sony would not affect the company’s future content or force it to provide exclusive items or deals for PlayStation players.
