Metro inspector hit by train dies

A second Metro worker who was struck by a Yellow Line train late last month died and a woman was in critical condition Friday after she was struck on the Orange Line, according to transit officials.

Matthew Brooks, 36, of Waldorf, had been in critical condition since he and Leslie A. Cherry were hit by the train on Nov. 30. Cherry, 52, died on the day of the accident.

On Friday, a six-car train struck a woman at the Deanwood Station in Washington near the Prince George¹s County border. The extent of her injuries was unclear.

Brooks and Cherry were struck in Alexandria. The two men were inspecting the rails near the Eisenhower Avenue station when they were hit from behind by a four-car Yellow Line train that was out of service and on its way to the Alexandria Rail Yard.

Brooks is the third Metro worker to die this year, the fourth since October 2005 andthe 15th in Metro’s 30-year history. Seven of those workers were hit by trains.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
