DC region boasts well-educated, well-paid residents

Many communities in the Washington, D.C. region are home to some of the country’s best-educated and best-paid residents, according to new Census Bureau data.

The Census Bureau released estimates from its five-year American Community Survey for this first time Tuesday, providing even the smallest communities valuable data on economic, demographic, and social issues.

The figures are based on a rolling sample survey mailed to 3 million addresses between Jan. 1, 2005 and Dec. 31, 2009.

Highlights of the survey included 19 jurisdictions with a poverty rate below five percent, including Howard County in Maryland, as well as Fairfax, Falls Church, and Loudoun County in Virginia.

Even more Washington region localities made a list of 17 jurisdictions in which more than 50 percent of the 25-plus population had a bachelor’s degree. These included Howard and Montgomery counties in Maryland, as well as Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, and Fairfax and Loudoun counties.

The figures provided by the survey are only estimates, unlike the population count that will be provided from the 2010 census.
