Trump Jr. shared ideas to overturn 2020 election in text to Mark Meadows

Donald Trump Jr. shared ideas about overturning the 2020 election results with a top member of his father’s administration, according to a newly revealed text message.

The missive, obtained by the House committee investigating the Capitol riot, was sent to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows two days after the November contest, suggesting lawsuits, advocating recounts in certain swing states, and having a handful of Republican legislatures put forward fake “Trump electors,” CNN reported Friday.

“We have operational control Total leverage,” Trump Jr.’s message read. “Moral High Ground POTUS must start 2nd term now.”

After losing the presidency to Joe Biden, Donald Trump and his allies insisted that several other battleground states were ripe with widespread fraud and irregularities, claims that have been roundly rejected by election officials and the courts. Amid this push to overturn the results, alternate slates of electors were prepared and sent to Washington, D.C.

The Jan. 6 committee has been investigating the Capitol riot, Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, and the nexus between the two.

Trump Jr. “received numerous messages from supporters and others,” and the particular message to Meadows “likely originated from someone else and was forwarded,” his lawyer, Alan Futerfas, said.

Lawyers for Meadows and the Jan. 6 panel declined to comment, according to the report.
