London mayor won’t visit U.S. with Trump as president

The recently anointed Muslim mayor of London says if Donald Trump becomes president of the United States, he won’t visit America.

“I want to go to America to meet with and engage with American mayors,” Sadiq Khan, who was elected on Friday, told Time in an interview conducted over the weekend. “If Donald Trump becomes the president I’ll be stopped from going there by virtue of my faith, which means I can’t engage with American mayors and swap ideas.”

Khan, who was a member of Parliament for nine years prior to becoming London’s new mayor, is also now most powerful Muslim politician in Europe. Khan’s Conservative opponents attempted to paint him as a radical, which he called using a “Donald Trump playbook.”

“Conservative tacticians thought those sort of tactics would win London and they were wrong. I’m confident that Donald Trump’s approach to politics won’t win in America,” he said in the interview, adding that he hopes to visit the the U.S. “before January in case Donald Trump wins.”

In December, Trump called “for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on” following the San Bernardino terrorist attacks.
