‘We’re not calling anyone names,’ says AOC as she accuses GOP of ‘xenophobia … white supremacy’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Friday the progressive movement is different from the “xenophobia” and “white supremacy” of the Tea Party because they do not call people names.

“We’re not calling anyone names,” Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said during a town hall event with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes. “People say Tea Party of the left, and I find this phrase very interesting. The phrasing is very interesting because the grounding of the Tea Party was xenophobia, the underpinnings of white supremacy.”

Ocasio-Cortez has become a favorite target of Republicans after her upset victory over establishment Rep. Joe Crowley. Since her election, Ocasio-Cortez has been aggressive in pushing for progressive policies, including her Green New Deal, that have garnered backlash and ridicule from many on the right who warn these ideas would lead to a massive expansion of government.

“We are committed to policies that make American lives better,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “We are actually talking about something substantive.”
