A California school district planned to vote on instituting an on-campus Planned Parenthood location on Monday night, though the district is now postponing consideration of the measure.
The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District will no longer consider the proposal to open a Planned Parenthood clinic at John Glenn High School during Monday’s meeting, according to a statement.
“The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board of Education will postpone discussion of Board Agenda Item #12a regarding the Planned Parenthood clinic at John Glenn High School. As a result, action will not be taken this evening during the regularly scheduled Board Meeting. The Board of Education and Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District has no further comment at this time,” the district said in a press release.
Abortion is not listed as a service that the proposed clinic would provide. However, it does note that the clinic may make referrals for medical procedures at other Planned Parenthood facilities.
93% OF VOTERS ‘EXTREMELY’ OR ‘VERY’ CONCERNED OVER INFLATION: POLL
The seven-member school board was going to decide whether to enter into a five-year contract with the abortion provider and reproductive care company, which will need to be renewed every five years thereafter. It is unclear if or when the proposal will be revisited in the future.
If approved, the clinic would be authorized to diagnose and treat sexually transmitted diseases, prescribe and dispense medication, and insert “non-surgical long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCS), including, without limitation, IUDs.”
Furthermore, the location would provide “referrals for additional medical or other health care services where indicated. Provider may make referrals to other health centers operated by Provider for services not offered at the Schools.”
Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is listed on the proposal as the provider.
In 2019, the location announced a mission to establish 50 “well-being centers” at local high schools with the goal “to create a safe space in each school where students can receive the education and health services they need to lead healthy lives.”
