Stimulus update: Virginians to receive $500 rebate checks by Halloween

Virginia residents can expect up to $500 in tax rebates if they file before Nov. 1, just in time for Halloween.

The one-time tax stimulus check is for state taxpayers who had a tax liability on their 2021 returns. Eligible taxpayers can receive up to $250 if filing separately and $500 if filing jointly.

STIMULUS UPDATE: DIRECT INFLATION RELIEF CHECKS WORTH $1,050 TO BE SENT OUT NEXT MONTH

The state will send returns based on how 2021 taxes were filed, either as checks in the mail or by direct deposit. If an applicant has moved since filing taxes, the check may be forwarded to the new address.

Those who filed in early September should have received their rebate by Oct. 17. The deadline to apply for a rebate is Nov. 1.

Applicants should not be taxed on their rebates if they took the standard deduction on their 2021 tax returns. However, those who itemized deductions on their returns may need to report the rebate when filing federal income tax returns.
