Count Code Pink among the former Democratic supporters who seem disillusioned enough with the new Congress to call for ‘regime change.’ According to a recent piece in the Washington Times:
“We see that the people who advise the leadership of the Democratic Party have been saying to them, ‘Let this be Bush’s war. … Let’s keep this going until the presidential elections, and then we’ll win the White House and then we’ll change things,’ ” she said. “We find that totally immoral and we say, ‘We are not really interested in who is in the White House and who’s taking what seats in Congress,’ ” Ms. Benjamin said. “We are interested in ending the war…” But in a shift of strategy, Code Pink plans to rally its 180,000 members nationwide to make the war a campaign issue and challenge Democratic leaders, who Ms. Benjamin said lack the “fighting spirit” to stop the war.
Medea Benjamin talks about the effort at regime change here, saying that she’s ‘disgusted with all of them.’ Code Pink has changed gears in its effort to end the war. Now they are advocating lawbreaking:
It’s time for taxpayers who oppose this war to join together in nonviolent civil disobedience and show Congress how to cut off the funds for this war and redirect resources to the pressing needs of people. There is a great tradition of war tax resistance in the United States. When our political leaders have not listened to the will of the people, individuals have engaged in civil disobedience.
The good news for Code Pink is that there appears to be a 2008 candidate who accurately reflects their views:
