WATCH: Joy Reid slams Thanksgiving as ‘fairy tale’ GOP uses to erase genocide

Thanksgiving is a “simplistic fairy tale” based on a GOP lie that “erases the genocide” of Native Americans, MSNBC’s Joy Reid said Wednesday.

Reid’s assault on the holiday came as part of her show the ReidOut.

“It is a holiday riddled with historical inaccuracies. It is built on this myth that the indigenous welcomed their colonizers with open arms and ears of corn,” according to Reid.

“A simplistic fairy tale interpretation of a 1621 encounter between indigenous tribes and English settlers that erases the genocide that followed,” she added.

Republicans need this fairy tale to hide the fact that the true nature and history of the United States is based in violence, she said.

“It’s the truth that Republicans want banned from our textbooks because here is the secret they want so desperately to keep: We are a country founded on violence,” Reid said. “Our birth was violent. In 1619, a ship with more than 20 enslaved Africans landed in Virginia, ushering in two centuries of American slavery that left millions in chains or dead.”

Republicans and the rest of the country need to recognize that the country is still violent and filled with bigoted hatred, the MSNBC host argued.

“The klan is still active, and as Americans, we continue to choose violence,” Reid said. “We are a country that chooses violence over and over again. There is no facet of American society that is untouched by it.”

The MSNBC host was bashed on social media for going off on the holiday that brings family and friends together.

“This is a woman who can’t deal with how many Americans can’t afford to buy a turkey this year so she attacks the entire holiday,” one Twitter user posted. “She must be a miserable guest on Thanksgiving!”

“This Thanksgiving I’m thankful for Joy Reid, who makes the case that liberals hate America far better than any conservative ever could,” another user tweeted.

“Millions of Americans are spending this blessed day with family, graciously thanking God for all they have and for the sacrifices made by their ancestors,” one journalist commented. “Then there are a few ungrateful, spoiled-rotten millionaires who can’t ruin it for the rest of us.”
