‘Tis the season to indulge. For an adults-only repast of “Vampire & Citizen,” “Victual Trials,” “Hustler Extreme Sex Volume 78” and other paeans to overconsumption, check out Flashpoint’s new exhibition.
“CONSUME” reflects on moderation, gluttony and waste. Be assured, in keeping with the spirit of the season, you’ll be able to shop and nosh while ogling works created specifically for this show by Lani Iacovelli and Michael Wichita, of D.C., Jessie Lehson and Heidi Neff, of Baltimore, and Chris Lawrence, of Philadelphia.
“We met as a group a number of times through the process, so it was really fun to talk about the divergent ideas and how they connected and intersected,” curator Angela Jerardi said. Lehson’s piece — made entirely out of sugar — references food’s roles from sustenance to unnecessary and even unhealthful luxury. Neff addresses the consumption of sexuality, while Iacovelli’s work nods to being consumed by emotions. “CONSUME” also features a storefront display of small handmade pieces for show and sale.
Saturday evening’s opening reception features a performance by Iacovelli and Ginger Wagg. A Dec. 16 event, EAT + BUY, integrates an interactive food demo. LOOK + LISTEN, the exhibition’s Jan. 6 finale, features musicians and a DJ.
Save room for the rich, eclectic visual buffet on 14th Street as Gallery plan b welcomes back artists from past shows.
To indulge in fresh twists on nostalgia, visit Gallery Neptune in Bethesda. The just-opened “Winter Exhibition” offers an alternative wonderland of paintings by Greg Ferrand, mixed-media sculpted characters by Lisa Williamson and surprises from doll designer/quiltmaker Gwendolyn Aqui. These bold conversation-starters will leave viewers satisfied.
