Thick black smoke filled Baltimore?s skyline Wednesday afternoon as a fire raged in a storage room filled with toxic chemicals at a concrete restoration company
Two firefighters were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Heavy fire and smoke became visible at Choice Restoration Services Inc. at about 1:45 p.m. Firefighters at the scene called for a hazardous materials unit after learning that toxic chemicals polyurethane, propane and diesel fuel were stored in the building.
“Visibly, [the building] did suffer very heavy damage,” Cartwright said.
“We made great headway on the fire,” Cartwright said about an hour after the 911 call was made and the fire department was dispatched.
It is too early to pinpoint the cause, he said. “We can?t rush the fire investigators,” he said.
The Baltimore City Arson Task Force will work with the Office of the Fire Marshal to determine the cause of the fire and the monetary damage to the building and its contents, Cartwright said. The results are expected within a few days.
None of the four employees at Choice Restoration was injured. Two firefighters were transported to Mercy Medical Center. One suffered an injury on either the leg or back, and the other a wrist injury ? “nothing serious,” Cartwright said.
