Maine residents only have a few weeks left to claim one-time $850 check

The clock is ticking for Maine residents to collect their $850 relief checks.

Some 858,000 people are estimated to be eligible to receive the relief payment, which taps into a budget surplus for funding and is intended to alleviate inflationary and other pandemic woes afflicting residents of the Pine Tree State. Recipients have until the end of October to file the proper paperwork.

SOCIAL SECURITY UPDATE: REGULAR BENEFIT CHECK WORTH $1,547 SET TO GO OUT TODAY FOR MILLIONS

“What this budget shows once again, through hard work and good faith negotiation, Democrats, Republicans, and independents can come together to do what is right for Maine people. And that we can do so without rancor or bitter partisanship that has sometimes divided Augusta in the past,” Gov. Janet Mills said when she signed a bill for the relief, per NewsCenterMaine.

Mills signed a bill cementing the COVID-19 relief checks back in April. In order to qualify, residents must file their 2021 Maine income tax return by Oct. 31 and be full-year residents of the state.

To qualify, individual filers must not be filed as a dependent and must have an income that is under $100,000 if filing individually and under $200,000 if filing jointly, according to the governor’s office.

The governor proposed the relief measure and received support from the state legislature. The provision is expected to return a total of $729.3 million to taxpayers.
