Police pinpoint suspected source of Texas gunman’s weapon

Police have pinpointed a man they suspect is the source of the weapon Seth Ator used during his mass shooting spree in Texas last weekend.

Authorities questioned the unidentified man Wednesday at his home in Lubbock, Texas, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Investigators remain officially uncertain how Ator, 36, obtained the AR-15 rifle he used to kill seven and wound 22 until police shot him dead outside a movie theater. Having been deemed mentally unfit by a court, Ator was forbidden under federal law to purchase a firearm, for which reason police suspect he bought the gun privately.

His attempt to purchase a firearm in January 2014 failed after he was flagged during a criminal and mental health background check. Such safeguards are not in place when a gun is purchased privately.

The man suspected of selling the gun to Ator reportedly built and resold his own weapons, a practice made easy by the availability of the necessary parts on the internet.

Ator drove between Midland and Odessa, Texas, on Saturday, shooting 29 people indiscriminately.
