The View host Joy Behar argued approval for impeachment of President Trump was low because the country was not paying attention to the president’s “crimes.”
“During Watergate, the company was not on board for impeachment either,” she said Wednesday on the show. “I recall watching. Every day it was on television. It was right there for everybody to see, all the crimes that Nixon committed. And now we will see all the crimes Trump has committed.”
“I don’t think that the people out there are watching this the way we do. The way news people do. The way political junkies do. The average person in Kansas and Iowa and all these states you’re talking about, they’re busy with their lives. Now, watch it every day, and see what he did. Then come to your conclusion about whether he’s destroying this country or not,” she added.
“Sixty-nine percent against is a staggering number,” host Meghan McCain cut in, referring to polls that show impeaching the president is unpopular.
A new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows only 37% of Americans support impeachment while 57% of Americans oppose it.
Behar, 76, has been a fierce proponent of impeachment. McCain mocked the host Tuesday over her support of impeachment, saying she and Democrats wanted prior president’s impeached before Trump.
“You were calling for Bush’s impeachment at one time. So again, there’s a certain point where Republicans watching … bear with me. When Republicans watching, you’re sounding an alarm at all times, so it’s hard to differentiate between who you think you can trust. Because 10 years ago, you couldn’t trust Bush, you couldn’t trust Romney, you couldn’t trust my dad,” McCain said.
