Comedian Bill Maher faced backlash on his late-night talk show by a panel that pressed him to show more respect for Trump voters.
“You might not think they’re very bright and all of that, but you know, you need to have respect for the rest of your citizens,” clinical psychologist and author Jordan Peterson told Maher during the “Overtime” segment of his HBO show, “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
Maher, defending his repeated insults of mocking of the president, claimed Trump “isn’t a regular Republican president,” and that has given him a newfound respect for previous Republicans in office.
“I never much liked the other Republicans who were in office, but I have a renewed respect for them. George Bush and Mitt Romney would not have tried to pull this shit. They just wouldn’t,” Maher said.
At that point, New York Times columnist Frank Bruni suggested that people need to talk to Trump supporters with “more generosity” and avoid telling them that they are “stupid” — a point with which Maher agreed.
