73-year-old woman’s arm severed in fatal New Orleans carjacking

Four teenagers have been charged with murder following a Monday carjacking that ended with a 73-year-old woman bleeding out on the streets of New Orleans with a severed arm.

The suspects — a 17-year-old male, a 16-year-old female, and two 15-year-old females — allegedly dragged the woman by her own vehicle when she became stuck in her seat belt. Onlookers watched the incident in horror, according to a report citing a Tuesday statement from local officials.

All the teenagers are facing second-degree murder charges, according to Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department Shaun Ferguson.

Ferguson said he recommended that the teenagers face the charges as adults.

“That’s a conversation that my team will have with the district attorney’s office,” Ferguson said. “I would say absolutely, I encourage, I will ask, that they be charged as adults. … I mean, look at the nature of the crime.”

The victim, Linda Frickey, died as a result of the injuries she suffered after becoming entangled in a seat belt and dragged by the carjackers.

“The door had closed on the seat belt, but she was stuck in it,” a witness said. “I got out of my vehicle, screaming for them, ‘Please stop. You’re dragging a lady.’ Other neighbors were also screaming at them.”

Another witness said he and his wife did their best to comfort the dying woman.

“I was telling this woman to hang in there,” he said. “Every time I heard a siren, I was hoping and praying that was an ambulance.”
