Florida exception? Trump requests mail-in ballot, again, despite railing against practice

After casting doubt on the legitimacy of mail-in voting throughout the 2020 election cycle, former President Donald Trump requested one of his own to cast his vote in a local election in his adopted home of Palm Beach, Florida.

The request for a mail-in ballot last Friday by Trump, a 74-year-old who was born in New York City, is his third since declaring himself a resident of Palm Beach County in 2019, according to the Palm Beach Post.

The former president made the request a week after the deadline that ballots had to be sent by mail, though ballots can be requested through Tuesday if they are picked up in person by the voter or a designee. Trump sent an associate to pick up his ballot on his behalf for the presidential primary last March and the August primary, which he likely did again in this case, the report noted.

Several states expanded mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic due to the public health concerns related to social distancing.

Ahead of the 2020 election, Trump claimed widespread mail-in voting was far less secure than in-person voting, urging his supporters to show up in person to the polls. And since the contest, Trump has repeatedly insisted the 2020 election was riddled with fraud and stolen from him in favor of President Biden. Such claims by Trump and his allies in court have been roundly rejected and clash with assurances about the integrity of the contest by election officials.

Despite his criticism of the practice in general, Trump praised Florida’s vote-by-mail system in August, tweeting that it was safer and more secure than other states.

“Whether you call it Vote by Mail or Absentee Voting, in Florida the election system is Safe and Secure, Tried and True. Florida’s Voting system has been cleaned up (we defeated Democrats attempts at change), so in Florida I encourage all to request a Ballot & Vote by Mail!” Trump said at the time.
