Sparrows Point worker dies in accident

A worker at the Sparrows Point steel plant in Baltimore County was killed in an accident Wednesday morning, the plant’s owners said.

The worker was involved in cleanup efforts around a bulk material handling system, which moves raw materials from a storage area to the plant’s furnace, said Severstal spokesman Mel Baggett.

The accident was reported to the Baltimore County Fire Department at 10:24 a.m., said department spokeswoman Elise Armacost. She said initial reports indicated a worker was crushed, but could not provide further details.

Baggett said a “very intensive” investigation by plant officials, the United Steelworkers union, and local authorities was under way. He could not confirm further details of the accident and declined to provide details of the worker who was killed.

“We don’t know much at this point,” Baggett said. “We take these things very seriously, no rock will go unturned.”

Union officials did not immediately return calls for comment.

“We send our condolences to the family,” said Gregory Mason, CEO of Severstal International. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with them during this difficult time.”
