HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — A retired World War II Coast Guard veteran will be honored Friday at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby.
Officials say 92-year-old William “Bill” Barnes of Columbus served aboard a U.S. Coast Guard patrol vessel in the Pacific. He is credited with shooting down three enemy aircraft and assisting in the downing of two others.
