Marco Rubio took a swipe at his Republican rival Donald Trump over Trump’s comments about the need for Israel to “sacrifice certain things” to reach a peace deal.
“A lot will have to do with Israel and whether or not Israel wants to make the deal – whether or not Israel’s willing to sacrifice certain things,” Trump said, according to the Associated Press. “They may not be, and I understand that, and I’m OK with that. But then you’re just not going to have a deal.”
Rubio, speaking Thursday at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s presidential forum in Washington, did not mention Trump by name but went after the sentiment the New York businessman expressed.
“Some in our own party have actually called for more sacrifice from the Israeli people. They are dead wrong,” Rubio said. The Florida senator said having a “fundamental understanding” of the sacrifices Israel has already made in en effort to reach peace with Palestinians should be a prerequisite for being president of the United States.
“This is not a real estate deal where the two sides argue over money,” Rubio added in another nod to Trump’s background.
Trump is scheduled to speak later Thursday at the RJC event.
