Linda Cropp on Tuesday rolled out her first two television ads in the mayoral race, one that illustrates her accomplishments as nine-year D.C. Council chair and another that attacks her main opponent’s record.
With the two 30-second spots, Cropp now has a full-fledged media campaign in place, having launched a pair of radio ads last week. The primary is Sept. 12.
“There are real differences between the candidates, and television ads are just one more way we are providing voters with factual information,” Cropp said in a statement.
The race front-runner, Ward 4 Council Member Adrian Fenty, has yet to unveil any electronic media advertising. Alec Evans, Fenty’s campaign manager, said the Fenty campaign will roll out their ads “in the future.” And they will be positive spots, Evans said.
Cropp’s first ad, titled “Determined,” focuses on the chairman’s achievements. The second, called “Judgment,” tackles Fenty’s record as an attorney in private practice. This ad continues Cropp’s recent assault on Fenty, from his “no” vote on the crime emergency to his admonishment from the D.C. Bar for failing to protect an elderly client’s estate.
Ron Eckstein, Cropp’s campaign spokesman, called the buy “sizable.”
“This is a continuation of the same type of negative campaigning that is turning District voters off and which runs contrary to the people’s desire to see the District as a place with a brighter future for all,” Evans said.
Money should be of little concern to either candidate. As of Aug. 10, Cropp had $1.27 million in the bank for the stretch run, while Fenty had $1.6 million on hand.
