More than 30 people were left dead after more than two dozen Russian missiles hit a Ukrainian base near the border with Poland.
The attack saw more than 30 cruise missiles bombard the International Peacekeeping and Security Center, a training facility located in the city of Yavoriv, according to the Associated Press. At least 35 people were left dead and 134 injured as a result of the attack.
“Today’s missile strike, targeting the International Centre for Peacekeeping and Security, was only 20 km from the EU/NATO border,” the Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security wrote in a Twitter post early Sunday morning.

“The attack is thought to be the westernmost carried out by [Russia] in 18 days of the war,” the center wrote in the post.
The base has served as a place to train Ukrainian military members with the help of instructors from both the United States and several other NATO countries, according to the AP. Additionally, the base has hosted a variety of NATO practices on-site.
Lviv Gov. Maksym Kozytskyi said that “because the air defense system worked,” several of the missiles were “shot down” during the attack.

Ukrainian Minister of Defense Oleksii Reznikov labeled the attack a “terrorist attack,” adding that “foreign instructors” were working at the base, he wrote in a post on Twitter. Reznikov went on to call for a “no-fly” zone to be established.

Despite calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a “no-fly” zone to be established, the Biden administration has previously rejected calls for a no-fly zone, labeling the measure an “escalatory” move.
