NFL changes COVID-19 protocols ahead of Thanksgiving holiday

The NFL is revising its COVID-19 protocols ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, according to a memo sent to teams on Tuesday.

The league said in a memo it would mandate that both vaccinated and unvaccinated team personnel wear masks while indoors for a week beginning on Thanksgiving Day, The Hill reported.

Team personnel will also be required to get tested for COVID-19 on Monday, Nov. 29, and Wednesday, Dec. 1. Mask wearing will not be mandated while teams are practicing outdoors or inside their practice facilities.

The memo cited rising COVID-19 case rates to justify the changes.

“This upward trend, coupled with the onset of colder weather driving individuals indoors, has resulted in an increased risk of infection among players and staff,” the memo said. “Our experts and data confirm that getting vaccinated remains our strongest defense against contracting and transmission of the virus within club facilities.”

The league also encouraged teams to offer drive-thru COVID-19 testing for family members and other people close to the players or team staff. To help with enforcing the new rules, the league offered to send league personnel to team facilities.
