Va. program disposes of many tons of pesticides

Virginia’s Pesticide Disposal Program got rid of 70,509 pounds of unwanted pesticides this year. The project ran from Aug. 31 to Sept.15, and in those two weeks farmers, homeowners and other residents were able to bring in pesticides to have them safely disposed of at no cost.

The Virginia Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services and the Virginia Pesticide Control Board said 55,615 pounds of liquid pesticides and 14,894 pounds of solid pesticides were collected and incinerated.

The program was first held in 1990 and has continued to ensure a safe way to get rid of pesticides and have  a cleaner environment. Since the program’s launch, more than 1.6 million pounds of pesticides have been collected.
