Train carrying military munitions partially derails in Nevada

A train carrying military munitions and hazardous materials partially derailed in northeast Nevada on Wednesday.

No one has been reported injured and none of the ordinance — which public safety officials believe included small arms munitions, hand grenades, and bombs — or hazardous materials spilled out of the 22-car train in Elko County.

“We were very fortunate today,” Lt. Kevin McKinney of the Elko County Sheriff’s Office told the Reno Gazette Journal. “Initially we were concerned for the public and everyone else that there might be hazardous materials, but luckily it turned out that nothing hazardous was released into the air or onto the ground.”

The Army’s Joint Munitions Command confirmed munitions were being transported to the Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada, but did not confirm what type of ordinance was onboard.

From the train cars in the middle of the train that did derail, vegetable oil, and nonhazardous aluminum oxide appeared to be released.

Cleanup is underway and Interstate 80, which had been closed because of the crash, has been reopened. The Federal Railroad Administration is investigating the incident.
