Expanded bike share christened with new name

Drum rolls, please… The District and Arlington’s new bike-sharing program has a new name: Capital Bikeshare.

The District Department of Transportation Tuesday evening announced the name for the program that will bring about 1,000 bikes to 114 stations in the two jurisdictions this fall, expanding the District’s existing SmartBike D.C. program. Riders can rent a bike for a short trip, then drop it off at one of the stations.

Officials had offered an online vote through Friday but acknowledged it wasn’t an entirely democratic process out of fear that Stephen Colbert’s name might get voted in by the masses.

Sure, Capital Bikeshare is not as creative as some of the contenders in the online survey, such as the quirky Capedal, the inscrutable George or the chummy WeCycle. But it does tell what it is.
