A Maryland man was stabbed to death in Adams Morgan early on Saturday morning, the District’s 15th homicide in as many days.
The death of Capitol Heights resident David Murphy, 23, adds to the recent surge of violent crime in the city that prompted Police Chief Charles Ramsey to declare a temporary crime emergency, which allows for more flexibility in officer deployment. In addition to the killings, July has also brought a rise in robberies and armed assaults.
Murphy was stabbed multiple times following what may have been an altercation with a 24-year-old woman, D.C. police spokesman Sgt. Joe Gentile said. The crime occurred alongside 2201 Champlain St. Johnisha Knight, of Southeast Washington, was arrested on Interstate 295 shortly after the incident and charged with felony murder.
Murphy was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The argument possibly stemmed from a singing contest earlier in the evening, Gentile reported.
There are no other suspects at this point, the sergeant said.
